September 2015 Newsletter
Welcome from Women's Health Grampians Chief Executive Officer, Marianne Hendron.
Firstly, I would like to thank you for your support, positive feedback and contributions to our newsletter. WHG continues to partner with key groups to lead change for the improvement of women’s health in the Grampians region and we look forward to working and sharing information with you.
We have had some recent staffing changes in our dynamic organisation: Kath Deakin has commenced 12 months parental leave, Simone Meade has gone travelling abroad for 12 months and Michelle Hunt and Cassie Lindsey have both joined Our Watch – the national body for the Prevention of violence against women and children. We wish them all much success with their journeys. We are delighted to announce new appointments including Dee Micevski who has commenced in her role as Health Promotion worker and Carolynne Hamdorf who will be based in the Wimmera region along with an expansion to the health promotion roles of existing staff Kate Souter and Claire Rooney. It is an exciting time for the organisation and we very much look forward to working with these women, who bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, experience and new energy to our organisation.

The Hon. Fiona Richardson MP - Visits WHG
We were delighted recently to welcome the Minister for the Prevention of Family Violence, The Hon Fiona Richardson MP to our offices during her visit to Ballarat. It was a great opportunity to discuss directly our shared focus in the primary prevention area and the Minister was most interested in the outcomes of the Act@Work program and our work with leadership groups across the Grampians region. Minister Richardson agreed with WHG on the need for current, accurate, locally based data to inform our work and measure our achievements in prevention of violence against women.
The Minister has recently launched The Measuring Toll: The Family Violence Index which will bring together data from across the fields of crime, justice, health, education and our community to create a single indicator of family violence. Link to Family Violence Index http://bit.ly/1M4718Y

Communities united at first Community of Practice Session on June 24, 2015 at the Robert Clark Centre. To eradicate violence against women from our communities, we need to challenge the sexist beliefs and attitudes that lead to gender inequality and ultimately underlie violence against women. A new initiative by Women’s Health Grampians (WHG) has been developed to unite regional communities to proactively address this issue. The Grampians Community of Practice for the Prevention of Violence against Women (GCOP-PVAW) is designed to support people with an interest in, or those working in the prevention of violence against women to implement best practice prevention projects. The first meeting was held held at Robert Clark Centre June 24, 2015

Session Two - Community of Practice to be held October 28th
The Grampians Community of Practice for the Prevention of Violence against Women (GCOP-PVAW) is an initiative by
WHG to support the implementation of best practice prevention projects in the Grampians region.
Session two will focus on:
1. Understanding the link between violence against women and gender equity
2. Considering how to maintain a focus on gender equity
3. Sharing tools and resources
4. Networking.
We will welcome Wei Leng Kwok who will be co-facilitating the GCOP-PVAW sessions. Wei Leng has extensive experience and high-level skills in designing, establishing, coordinating and evaluating communities of practices for practitioners in the preventing violence against women sector. People who have an interest in PVAW or those who
manage PVAW projects are encouraged to attend.

Rethinking Sexual Health Promotion in Rural Victorian settings – Free Full day workshop
Date: Thursday 3rd December 2015
Time: 9.30am to 4.30pm

Women’s Health Grampians would like to invite you to a full day workshop on “Rethinking Rural Sexual Health Promotion in Rural Victorian settings” The sessions will be run by Dr Alan Crouch - a practitioner researcher with more than thirty years’ experience in global health programs. This is a great opportunity for health promotion, community health, education and Council staff.
This free seminar will provide learning and insights into how we can improve the sexual health of women and men in our community.

Equality will not be achieved until the gender pay gaps are narrowed
Political and business leaders have overlooked a "totally unacceptable" gender pay gap of nearly 20 per cent, says outgoing Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner Elizabeth Broderick. Ms Broderick, who is stepping down in September after eight years in her role said she is broadly "optimistic" about the future of gender equality in Australia.
But equality would not be achieved until the gender pay gaps were narrowed, she said "I haven't seen much progress on pay equality. That in 2015, women earn 18.8 per cent less for work that is equal or comparable level to men is totally unacceptable," she said.

Support Your Local Region - White Ribbon Events - November 25th
White Ribbon Day is an annual event that encourages all men and women to take a stand and speak up against violence against women and children.
On Wednesday 25 November 2015 your local region will once again show its support for White Ribbon Day, an international campaign that promotes the elimination of violence against women
This year the City of Ballarat invites you and your staff to get involved in the City of Ballarat’s 2015 White Ribbon Day event. The City of Ballarat is inviting the community to organise a walking group to join us in the CBD for a nonviolence oath swearing and BBQ.

Let us know what you are doing in your region so that we can help spread the word.
The 16 Days of Activism Against Gendered Violence is a global campaign. Around the world, from the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to Human Rights Day, people stand up and take action to realise a vision for a world free from sexual assault, domestic violence and family violence. We believe in this vision.
WHG are Planning to conduct a social media campaign re-tweeting and sharing #16daysofactivism. We will also collaborate and align with other WHSs in their initiatives on social media. We will use the opportunity to promote our infographics which raise awareness of regional data, underlying causes and highlight that violence against women is preventable. The infographic calls people to take action by challenging sexism, discrimination and violence against women.
Full details of the campaign will shortly be released via our website, twitter and regional media outlets.
