On 2 March 2026 it was our privilege to support Sherele Moody in installing the She Matters Mural in Ballarat. The mural commemorates the lives of women who have been killed through murder, manslaughter, neglect, or other unlawful acts since January 2024. The Ballarat mural also includes a section for women from the region who were killed prior to 2024.

Sherele Moody is a researcher, artist, journalist, activist, fierce feminist and founder of Australian Femicide Watch/ The RED HEART Movement. She originally erected the mural in Hosier Lane, Melbourne on International Women’s Day 2025. Her projects aim to keep Australia’s femicide crisis in plain sight: 78 Australian women were killed in 2025, and 106 in 2024. We have already lost 44 women to violence in 2026.

It is up to all of us to work towards a future where the She Matters Mural has become an historical artefact, when violence against women is eliminated and there are no more names to add to the wall.

The She Matters Mural will be in Hancocks Lane, Ballarat, for at least one year. Visitors are advised that project contains some names and photos of First Nations women lost to violence (with their families’ permission).
